Yes.

Gap coverage will not pay for any penalties/fees/additional interest you incur as a result of not making a payment or making a payment late.

Also -- a missed payment can drop your credit score as much as 70-100 points. Your credit score goes down....the cost of insurance, interest on credit cards/loans goes up.

That one missed payment is way more expensive than just the payment.

You will usually need to maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher. It would depend on the particular car insurance company if they will go by semester or by quarter but most go by semester. I really suggest you contact a few insures or browse through their websites to find out for sure.

Aside from good student discounts there are also other discount options that you may be eligible for. Check out the article I referenced below.

Hope this helps!

Here's the deal: the second you sign the dotted line for a new car the value drops 20%. The same time next year, the value plunges another 10 - 15%. This goes on for another two years, then the value levels off somewhat but still continues to drop. Should the unthinkable occur, such as a collision or fire/flood that totals your vehicle, you are left owing the remainder of the actual cash value and what you owe to the leinholder. This could be thousands and thousands of dollars. GAP will cover this amount owed, so if you are dumb enough (just kidding) to purchase a new car then GAP is a must.

"full coverage" doesn't cover everything, EVER. It's not a real insurance term, so it is VERY misleading (don't START me on "Act of God" which is also a non-insurance term).

Gap coverage pays the difference between the payoff balance on your car loan, and the actual cash value.

There are THREE different valuations you can have for your car; the most typical is Actual Cash Value. 90% of auto policies are written on an Actual Cash Value basis. If you buy a brand new, $20,000 car, the second you drive it off the lot, it loses value - maybe $4,000. If you put $500 down on it, or worse, no money down - and you have an accident when it's 5 minutes old, guess what!! The insurance won't pay you enough to pay off the loan!! That's where Gap coverage comes in. It will pay off the balance between the ACV of the car, and the loan, WITH EXCEPTIONS.

Major exception - if you were "upside down" on your prior car, and you rolled that balance into the new loan, the gap coverage will NOT pay off that prior balance.

You don't need it if you own your car outright, and you don't need it if you have equity in your car (the loan balance is less than the ACV). You probably need it if you're "upside down" on the loan, or if the car is leased.

best advice is to look around. shop in person, do NOT shop on the internet. the internet sites do not have your best interests in mind. check with the largest companies. they did not get big by charging too much or giving bad service. State Farm probably will give you the best rates if you have a clean driving record. be honest when you shop, all companies check on you and rates are based on driving records and discounts that you are eligible for. 36 years exp.

Be considered a Good Student 3.0 GPA: Safe Driver Discount; Multiple Policies; Multiple Driver; Be a Veteran; Age;. But this may not apply to all insurance companies. Shop around that no name insurance company may be just as good as Progressive but a lot less. Because they don't pay for all the advertising. Also check FICO score the higher it is the cheaper the insurance. Get rid of useless extra coverages. Example rental car if you have an extra car drive that one until you get yours fixed. Increase deductibles and lower bodily injury coverage, which your health insurance will usually pick up.

You'll want to get an accredited car alarm - there are certain brands/models of car alarm which get you significant reduction in premiums. I do it for each car I get these days as a matter of course. Well worth it.

I have heard that some auto insurers actually give some reductions in premiums if you remove some of the high performance upgrades (eg like a chip to give more horsepower from engine), but I suppose that just comes down to the overall power of the car - which is usually a factor in premiums.

You also want to shop around - most of the advertised companies in my area cost a LOT more than most of the quotes I got from this free quotes site I found. I ended up going with one of the ones I got quoted, save myself about $800 :) I'll need that for gas these days!!

There are a lot of discounts such as "good student discount" (3.0 GPA or higher), non-smoker, multiple cars insured, no recent tickets or accidents, and even if you took some driving classes.
